It's Stocking Stuffers Month....

What are your favorite stoicking stuffers? Have you cut down..I know I have and I'm trying to avoid the junky stocking stuffer stuff (cute but useless) that comes out around the holidays...
Have you found any unique fun things lately?

I saw a folding mini-colander (good for small fruits & small portions of beans), I will be going to buy them for my 21 & 19 year old... it's a start for their trousseau :) I thought it was pretty original

Their prefered ss is $$ . I will also be adding their annual Christmas ornament (they get 1 a year to add to their collection for when they leave the house).

I struggle with stocking stuffers a bit. They can turn into $ hogs really quickly if you go the gift card route, or even small but expensive things like DVDs, etc.

Or you can buy a bunch of cheap, inexpensive things that may or may not be needed/appreciated. It is hard to judge sometimes!

I am falling back into the territory of stocking stuffers being either homemade or free or both! :) Also, where possible, it is nice to make them a consumable - i.e. something that gets used up!

Handmade Stocking Stuffers (Non-Food):

- Ornaments ... There are a million DIY tutorials for a wide range of ornament types and styles. So many to choose from!

- Rear View Window Charms ... also a large variety of styles and ways to go here. You would want to gift something like this to someone you know would like it/use it. Here is one cute idea I saw recently:

http://liliannagrace.blogspot.com/2010/11/wine-cork-ornaments.html

- Gadget Sleeves ... whether for phone, MP3 player, navigation system, hand held game device, you name it! Make them from felt (higher quality wood blend will resist fraying, pilling better) or fleece (once again, there is a non-pillable fleece out there) for ease of sewing.

OR for the men if your life try to follow these tutorials:

http://www.instructables.com/id/Woven-paracord-braceletwatchband/?ALLSTEPS

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-Paracord-Leatherman-Pouch/?ALLSTEPS

Homemade Stocking Stuffes (Food/Drink)

- Popcorn Balls wrapped in cellophane or wax paper - have fun with these! Lots of recipes out there! Mix in red and green M&M's - whatever!

- Choc Covered Spoons ...Bundle a few together and tie with ribbon! The following tutorial uses wooden spoons, but you could just as easily use plastic ones.

http://www.abeautifulmess.com/2011/12/hot-chocolate-spoons-.html

- Hot Cocoa Mix (Repackaged) ... Whether you make your own mix or buy a large cannister at a good price, package it pretty! Put the mix in a small ziplock or sandwich bag to keep it fresh, but put that not so pretty plastic bag in something snazzy!

Make an envelope out of Christmassy scrapbook paper. Or throw it into a plain brown paper lunch sack you've decorated. Add a customized label. Bundle them with some choc covered spoons and you have a really nice stuffer!

FREE Stuffer Ideas:

Sign up for free samples and gift bags. If there is a B1G1F deal on something you usually buy, maybe the freebie gets put aside for someone's stocking.

Or sometimes when you buy the full size version of a product it comes with a separate trial size version attached.

Have a designated place to throw all of these little things during the year. I have a small paper shopping bag in the office closet.

Also consider that any stuffer idea you make at home using supplies you already had, or from repurposing items - can technically be considered "free" as well. At least I look at it that way, since I didn't have to spend any out of pocket $ for them.

The key is starting early, planning, and doing what you can, little by little.

But guess what - at the end of the story, the tortoise ALWAYS wins! :)

I too struggle with stocking stuffers...even though they're my favorite! I been trying NOT to buy useless little stuff, but then end up buying too much candy and snacks! Notepads and notecards are another thing I seem to always buy for my DD, but how many can she really use??

As DS is now 30 he appreciates things like toothpaste, deodorant, shoe shine kits, etc. in his stocking. One less thing that has to come out of his budget:)

But I also include a small Lego toy and some candy and silly stuff.

DH is harder....I do some personal care stuff but also look for things like paperback books he might enjoy..

Y'all have some great ideas! Since Santa stuffs our stockings, nothing is wrapped (he doesn't wrap gifts for under the tree, either) and I like it that way! Maybe I'm just lazy. lol Anyway, I, too, like consumable items like jerky, gum, lip balm (or gloss), some candy, but not too much, and special drink mixes are well-received as well. Oh, and BATTERIES! lol

Last year, I really cut down on the junk. I don't want things in there that will be tossed aside, so I try to buy mostly useful things and a few fun things.

I am not a fan of that stocking stuffer plastic, made in China type junk ,either. This year I was thinking of making a surprise ball for each person with some cash, gc, snacks, (not too much candy) and whatever little stuff I can find.

Okay, I apologize in advance for the length of this post!!! I have seriously held myself back here - believe it or not!

SOOOO many great ideas out there for DIY stuffers!!!

Here is a cute idea for using a printed label and a pair of gloves to turn a bag of microwave popcorn into something OH so cute! These would be great as teachers gifts or stocking stuffers! You could also use the technique on a candy car or something like that instead of popcorn...

http://lauriefurnell.blogspot.com/2008/11/snowman-freebie.html

Here is an idea for redoing the label on a bottle of pump hand sanitizer to turn it into Santa-tizer!!! 

http://jenshappyspot.blogspot.com/2011/12/hand-santa-tizer.html

Really cute idea for bookmarks! Simple supplies needed…the idea includes magnets but I would think the bookmark would work just fine without this feature…

http://savorthejourney.blogs.splitcoaststampers.com/2007/10/30/hannas-tis-the-season-bookmarks/

Another bookmark idea using felt you embroider and attach to elastic. I’d look for the elastic in the hair accessories section of the Dollar Store…should be able to find something that would work – although you may have to detach something already glued to it that might not be so pretty! 

http://www.flamingotoes.com/2012/02/felt-embroidered-bookmark/

One more felt bookmark variation, simple but cute!

http://simple-serendipities.blogspot.com/2011/12/felt-heart-bookmarks.html

Convert this hot/cold pack gift idea from Valentines to Christmas – repurpose fabric – DIY your label – such a cute stuffer!

http://www.saltwater-kids.com/2011/02/candy-free-valentines-day-gifts.html

For little girls, here is a stinkin’ cute idea for making necklaces using shrink-dink film! Once again I plan to purse Dollar Store for some cheap chains to use. Not sure how to get best price on shrink film, maybe Hobby Lobby with 40% coupon? Planning to check Walmart too…

http://www.the36thavenue.com/2012/01/shrink-film-friendship-necklaces.html

There are a mind boggling amount of tutorials out there for making fabric flowers. It is crazy! Use fabric you already have in the house or purchase clothing items from Goodwill/Garage sales to cut up and repurpose!

Add them to headbands, hair clips, hair combs, or even bobby pins for cute stocking stuffers for girls…Use places like the $ Store to get not so pretty headbands, clips etc. that you will end up covering with your pretty fabric creations! Here are a few inspiration pics!

Obviously these flowers can and are being attached to anything, so they are not limited to stocking stuffer territory. The sky is the limit!

Oh! And I just have to post this too! 10 DIY Stocking Stuffer ideas for boys!

http://blogs.babble.com/the-new-home-ec/2011/11/16/10-diy-handmade-stocking-stuffers-for-boys/

Order some unpainted "pegs" and make these beauties! Star Wars or Harry Potter themes but simple enough designs that I think I could do it...so cute!!!

http://www.simplesimonandco.com/2011/06/start-of-our-boys-week-peggies.html

And finally, if you can paint simple pictures this is a really cool idea for story stones! A bag of these in someone’s stocking would be so great! Use the stones to help tell their favorite story. Maybe theme them from the little one’s favorite book?

Thanks for all the links AuntJamelle....now to find time to look at all of them!!! I, too, began last year cutting back on the useless SS. I try to think of things each person will actually use or want. I need to start working on this. Time is ticking!!!!

Year before last I gave all of my daughter in laws and the grandsons monogrammed umbrellas. They loved it. I got the guys each a ball cap with their favorite logo's on each.

Last year our all time favorite college team LSU tigers were going to the championship playoffs so they all got various championship t-shirts which they were thrilled to wear for the "big game".

This year I've already gotten the daughter in laws each a gift certificate for a pedicure on their "mistle toes" with a bottle of Christmas glitter Opi nail polish and warm fuzzy socks. I'm not sure what else I'll put with that but pampering seems to be the theme for them so far. I've no clue for the guys yet.

Ellen - your DILs are lucky gals! These are great ideas! Add some bubble bath and a pouf or sponge, maybe some hot chocolate or a small candle...PERFECT!!!
