What a GREAT idea. I hope you don't mind if I steal it. I never think about all that space up above the cabinets. I have tired old tea pots up there and to think I could have been dressing it up for Christmas all this time!! Thanks for sharing the idea and all the links.

Fluttering happily in the clouds!!
I can't look at the various options until I get home tonight. But a few ideas even if I don't have links:

A pine cone painted and covered in glitter, with a little "base" underneath.

Crochet and knit - lots of various patterns around, and I know I made up a pattern very easily a few years back (I didn't write it down, but it was basically casting on a few sts at the start of rows for the base part of each layer, and then k2tog at the end of each row to get the sloping shape, symetrically, until it came to the last 2 sts, and then knitted a chain to make the loop for hanging - I swiss darned on a couple of stars as decoration).

Or felt shapes, decorated with sequins or nice buttons (or embroidery if you are good!!), sewn together and stuffed.

They all tend to be tree decorations that I hang on the tree itself....I don't tend to do much to the rest of the house apart from regular paper chains in the hall.

Oh, and I remember one that I saw on a website which was made of recycled babyfood jars, which had each been painted with glass paint (but transparent colour that you could see through IYKWIM), and then stacked up and glued together on their sides (so the ends of the jars were what you saw in different coloured circles). Very pretty, especially to put on a window sill and let light shine through it I would think...
