I have been searching for years to find an easy, quick, and simple old fashioned sugar cookie recipe. You know the ones you remember from your childhood. I have tried and failed my way through many recipes or ones that are so complicated with cookie press thingies and such. I usually have given up and bought the old standard slice and bake kind (which I find are a little greasy) and colored sugars and called it Christmas.
The last time I made them from scratch they were so hard the blue jays and squirrels even turned their noses up at them! (Do birds have noses?)

I use this one every year with no problem. Actually I just made some today. lol

1 cup margarine
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
3 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Cream butter. Add sugar, gradually, creaming until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Stir in vanilla. Add dry ingredients gradually to creamed mixture. Chill thoroughly. Roll on floured surface and cut in shapes. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 6-8 minutes.

These are very soft cookies.
