Wondering if anyone knows if you can substitute bourbon for rum in a traditional English Christmas cake (fruit cake).

I don't see why not. This came from a BBC Good Food article:

What alcohol should you use?

Strong, flavourful spirits with a high ABV are ideal for feeding fruitcakes. You can use rum, brandy or whisky for spice, or if you like citrus flavours, try an orange liqueur. Cherry brandy and amaretto will also work well if you prefer these.

My fruitcake recipe calls for bourbon. I actually went out and bought a Fifth last year, since it was my first attempt.

Oh wonderful, thank you! I actually don’t drink alcohol, so I’m not sure what the differences between rum and bourbon is, but, I know that one time I had a bourbon sauce, and it was one of the most delicious dessert sauces I’ve ever had.
