I pulled out my copy as I do every year and read it over the last couple of days. I get so much out of this book.

There is a lot of great advice about how to make the holidays more meaningful, how to get away from the commercialism of Christmas and lots of ideas for dealing with all kinds of situations that happen with family etc.

Has anyone else read this?

Tricia,

The best part of this book for me is the chapter about men and how they feel about the holidays. A lot of men feel like Christmas is a "Woman's Holiday". Let's face it, women do most of the planning and preparing for Christmas.

This is the way it was in my house for a long time. But, after reading this book so many times, I have been able to get DH more involved. His only contribution for years was putting up the outdoor lights and thankfully, this is something that he likes to do. I have been able to get him more involved in picking out gifts and going shopping with me. He used to love to wrap the gifts, but isn't able to physically do it anymore, so I have taken the pressure off him and started doing it myself - even though I hate it.

I noticed a big change in his attitude and enjoyment of the holidays when we started saving money in our Christmas Club account. He sees that everything is paid for with cash and there will be no bills come January. He also seems to enjoy the fact that we are making more homemade gifts for people and likes to help out with what we are making. I think he sees how much effort and thought goes into making a homemade gift and he wants the entire family to be a part of it. I can tell it makes him feel proud.

There is still more I would like him to be involved in, but I am happy with what he does. Baby steps. I really can tell that he enjoys the holidays a lot more than he used to.

Everybody wins!!

I think everyone should read it at least once. There are lots of great ideas about how to make your Christmas more family centered. It talks a lot about getting off the present giving merry-go-round. How to make it more religious centered if that is what you are looking forward. It also has a really great chapter about kids and what they really want during the holidays and it isn't presents.

I hope those of you who are going to read really enjoy it and get something out of it.

Stop by and talk about it when you are done reading it. I would love to hear what others think.

Speaking of On Strike for Christmas, I saw today where Lifetime Movie Network has made a movie of the book. It premieres December 5 at 8 p.m. I loved that book and can't wait to see the movie.

Unplug the Christmas Machine is an excellent book, if you have a chance to attend a workshop (usually hosted as a Bible study or women's group at your church) - attend!
Well worth the effort :) I loved it!
