Asia has a smaller number of Christians and Catholics so in many countries Christmas is more secular than religious. Most of Asia does not recognize Christmas as a public holiday so schools and banks remain open.
This is not the case for all countries.

The Philippines are known for celebrating the world's longest Christmas season- they begin celebrating on September 1st- Our kind of people!

In Korea Celebrating Christmas is a fairly new tradition. Santa wears a traditional Korean hat and his suit is blue as opposed to red.
Christmas Dinner features bulgogi as the main course and steamed rice cake with fruit for dessert

For The citizens of Japan, Christmas Day does not get much attention but Christmas Eve is commonly seen as a romantic day when couples get together and exchange gifts.
The most popular meal in Japan on Christmas- Kentucky Fried Chicken! That's right- thanks to a marketing campaign by the popular chain restaurant, the Japanese will place their order months in advance for Christmas dinner.

Christmas is celebrated in the larger cities of China but in rural areas mysteries it is viewed as a more mysterious foreign holiday. Cellophaned wrapped apples are a common gift as the word "apple" sounds like "peace" in Mandarin.

Thailand is a mostly Buddhist country but they love celebrating and do not want to be left out of the world's biggest party. They celebrate the King's Birthday on December 5th and festivities are known to go throughout the month.

Did you know that in Indonesia they make their Christmas trees out of chicken feathers? They also decorate their roads for the holiday with yellow coconut leaves. On Christmas Eve, cannons are let off and youngsters are known to stay up all night setting off fireworks. A full roasted pig is featured at holiday gatherings.

What other Christmas traditions and celebrations do you know about in Asia?

A few years ago, we invited Dh's coworker from Japan go with us to get our Christmas tree. We lent him an extra coat, gloves and hat since it was so cold that day. He said that most people do not have Christmas trees and if they do, it would be a small table top tree. He could not get over the idea of people driving to a tree farm, getting on tractor and wagon for a ride to the area on the farm to cut the tree and then actually cutting the tree and tying it to the roof of the car to bring home.
