Day 2
TV SPECIALS & MOVIES & BOOKS

Fun fab shows!! It's funny to look back at these and see that they do look so "1970's".
I watched most of these once. The Bass/Rankin more than a few times and still watch my DVD's of some of those every year! I love the musical of Scrooge with Albert Finney. The House Without a Christmas Tree was a movie that tugged at the heart and I even had the book. The '70's version of Miracle on 34th St was ... so so (But I like the old black and white one!!). And since my family liked old movies when they came on TV, I knew that Marlo Thomas' It Happened One Christmas was a remake of Jimmy Stewart's movie, It's a Wonderful Life.

My research gave me insight into the Bass/Rankin specials that were created using Japanese stop motion animation called "Animagic", in which all the characters are made out of wood and plastic and animated via stop-motion photography.

The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971 TV Movie)
The House Without a Christmas Tree (1972 TV Movie)
The Bob Hope Vietnam Christmas Show (1972)
Miracle on 34th Street (1973 TV Movie)
The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974 TV Movie)

Father Knows Best: Home for Christmas 1977
Two decades after the sitcom's original run, the original cast of Father Knows Best returned for its second reunion movie.
Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas (1977)
This posthumous presentation is best remembered for its David Bowie collaboration. The 30-year-old glam icon teamed with the aging singer for "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy." The duet was recorded on September 11, a month before Crosby died of a heart attack.

1970's Commercials

TV commercials have been a thing since 1941. So, looking back at some commercials of this decade brought back a lot of memories for me. Boy, these sure do just "feel like the '70's". The clothes and hair!!

Christmas Commercials Norelco Santa – about 1 minute

McDonald's and 7-Up Commercials – About 1 minute
=

K Mart and Mattel Electronics – about 2 minutes
=

Burger King – 31 seconds

Journey Through Animated Christmas Shows
– about 8 minutes
I sure do remember all these and couldn't wait until they came on the TV! The beginning of The Little Drummer Boy always made me cry. Loved Rudolph and Burl Ives as the snowman. And how about the funny Heat Mizer and Snow Mizer being naughty! (even though some were made in '60's, we were still watching in '70's) Who would have thought that some day VHS would be a thing and I could watch my favorite Christmas shows whenever! Yep, bought all of those and then ... bought them on DVD later!!

The Walton's Sing – about 2 minutes
This family TV show was a staple in our house. I just got done binge watching it recently on the Hallmark Channel!

Books
This is a fun list. We kids did get books as Christmas presents. We also looked forward to getting out the Christmas books from the storage totes every year and keeping them on the coffee table and reading some every night. I still do both those things to this day! Looking over the titles has me reminiscing about my childhood books. I wasn't reading Stephen King then (apparently he was big in the '70's) ... but here are a few I did read.

Watership Down, Richard Adams, 1972
All Creatures Great and Small, James Herriot, 1972
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Robert C. O'Brien, 1971
The Hiding Place: The Triumphant True Story of Corrie Ten Boom, 1971
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, Judy Blume, 1970

I did get the All Creatures series as a Christmas gift!!

I have very fond memories of waiting every year to watch:
Rudolph and all the Claymation shows, Charlie Brown Christmas, and The Grinch.

Back then, you had watch it on that exact night or you would miss it until next year.
All of those shows were a huge highlight in the Christmas Season.

Fun to watch the videos and read the lists of books. I was too busy with babies to do much of anything else back then.

Oh, this was wonderful! I forgot about the coupon books at McDonalds and Burger King! And that Kmart commercial... I miss their blue light specials...

I didn't realize that Heat Miser and Snow Miser were from the 1970's. I've always enjoyed the David Bowie and Bing Crosby version of "The Little Drummer Boy."

I'm adding the live action Christmas specials to my list of things to search out!!! Thank you!

Those commercials were a KICK! I had forgotten all about the 7-up Dots! Too fun!

LOVED the Waltons clip! I am eventually going to just have to sign up for Hallmark channel so I can watch them!!! And that actually just gave me a great possible idea for a gift for my MIL for Christmas this year. I don't think she has anything but public TV channels - I'm going to ask DH if we can get her a Amazon firestick or something like it and pay for some channels she would like for the year!
