A story that happens in the 1940’s and a Christmas classic. I got it as a gift from the Elves last Christmas and watched it for the 1st time during the Holidays. Hope you enjoy it!

Little know facts

The house from the film is located at 3159 W 11th Street in Cleveland, Ohio. The home was bought on eBay in 2005 for $150,000 by superfan of the movie, Brian Jones. Jones spent $350,000 more to restore both the exterior and interior of the house to the way it originally looked in the movie. In 2006, the house was opened to the public as a museum and gift shop.

Jack Nicholson was almost Ralphie’s dad. Jack Nicholson was interested in playing the role of Ralphie’s grumpy father after reading the script, but the studio didn’t want to pony up the cash. Director Bob Clark wasn’t initially notified of Nicholson’s interest because the studio didn’t want to pay Nicholson’s hefty fee, which would have doubled the film’s budget.

Flick’s tongue wasn’t actually frozen to that flagpole. A hidden suction tube was used to safely create the illusion that Flick’s tongue was stuck to the icy pole.

Ralphie says he wants the Red Ryder BB Gun 28 times throughout the course of the movie.
The real Red Ryder BB Gun was first made in 1938 and was named after a comic strip cowboy. You can still buy it today for the low, low price of $44.99. But the original wasn't quite the same as the one in the movie; it lacked the compass and sundial that both the Jean Shepard story and the movie call for. Special versions had to be made just for A Christmas Story.

Did you know 7 movies were made about this family ?

A sequel involving Ralphie and his family, titled My Summer Story was made in 1994. With the exceptions of Tedde Moore as Ralphie's teacher (Miss Shields) and Jean Shepherd as the narrator (the voice of the adult Ralphie), it features an entirely different cast. A series of television films involving the Parker family, also from Shepherd stories, were made by PBS, including Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss (1988), The Star-Crossed Romance of Josephine Cosnowski (1985), The Great American Fourth of July and Other Disasters (1982), and The Phantom of the Open Hearth (1976).
Another sequel, A Christmas Story 2, was released straight to DVD and Blu-ray[40] in 2012 and directed by Brian Levant.
Haven’t seen it but despite what is said on the dvd seems there are none of the original actors in it. Would like to hear if any of you have seen it and to know what you think of it.

A Christmas Story games

Some Christmas Story boardgames are available for the fans at Amazon . Nice!

Some games based on the movie (Source : http://www.squidoo.com/a-christmas-story-party)
I posted a few but there are more on the website

1) How do Piggies Eat - Ralphie's brother always had to be coaxed to eat so his mom would have him pretend he was a pig and oink to get him to do so. So with that in mind pick a food that you want to use and put the same amount on plates for your party guests. Hands behind back they all must Oink like pigs while they race to see who can finish first.
2) Crossword Game Raphies father won his famous Leg Lamp by completing a Crossword Puzzle that had to do with Great Figures in American Literature and mailing it in. So a twist on that - create a Crossword Puzzle on whatever subject you want that is age appropriate for the party and have a race to see who can complete it first. You can play in teams or individually. When done they must run a place it in a make shift mailbox you can set up. Once checked if all the answers are correct they are the winner. The prize can be Leg Lamp Puzzle, Keychain, Lamp or other Leg Lamp item.
3) What did you say? - Who can forget when Ralphie was helping his dad change the flat tire on the car and he dropped the bolts and said "Fudge", but that is not really what he said. So when he got home his punishment was to have a bar of Lifebuoy Soap in his mouth. So here is what you can do for the twist on this one. Have a small bar of soap for each guest - make a hole in one end and string it with a thin rope that would be tough enough to hold it. You are going to make each guest a soap necklace to wear around their necks. When the guests arrive you are going to pick a word they are not allowed to say - obviously make it one that will be used often (does not have to be a curse word - unless of course it is adults only). So for example - Christmas, Birthday, Party etc.. When someone hears another person use the word that person must then place the soap in their mouth for a set time - maybe 30 seconds. Now you can find things that look like bars of soap, but are edible if it sounds to gross - but really that is the point. This will be very funny.

4) What Ralphie Wants - For this game you can play it like telephone. Hand the first player in line the paper showing what Ralphie wants for Christmas. If you do not remember here it is: An official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model BB rifle with a compass in the stock and that thing which tells time. Then they whisper that in the next persons ear and so on down the line. See what the last person who has to repeat it aloud comes out with - it is not easy to remember unless you are a die hard movie fan.

5) You're gonna Shoot your Eye Out - Everyone kept telling Ralphie "You're gonna Shoot your Eye Out" every time he told them what he wanted for Christmas. So for this what you can do is get A Christmas Story Poster and glue it down to a Thick Poster board or Cardboard and just like a Pin the tail on the Donkey Game you can see who can pin the BB closest to his eye.

Then + Now : The cast of 'A Christmas Story'

(Source: http://popcrush.com/then-now-cast-a-christmas-story/ by Michelle McGahan December 24, 2013 1:17 PM )
“2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the heartwarming film, and to honor it, we’ve found out what the cast has been up to these past three decades. Read on to see where your favorite ‘Christmas Story’ actors are now.”
Peter Billingsley (Ralphie Parker)Then: There’s something about Peter’s portrayal of bespectacled Ralphie that resonates with every child and child-at-heart. As the nine-year-old hero of ‘A Christmas Story,’ Billingsley played a typical, midwestern all-American boy whose longing for a Red Ryder BB gun forced him to endure countless rounds of “You’ll shoot your eye out!” — a torture that was ultimately worth it in the end.
Now: Since ‘A Christmas Story,’ Billingsley has had a successful career behind the camera, serving as an executive producer on many major motion pictures, including ‘The Break-Up,’ ‘Four Christmases,’ and most notably, ‘Iron Man.’ (Billingsley also had a cameo appearance alongside Will Ferrell in ‘Elf.’) In 2009, he made his directorial debut with the Vince Vaughn comedy ‘Couple’s Retreat.’ But despite his Hollywood success, Billingsley has not forgotten his roots, and was instrumental in bringing ‘A Christmas Story… The Musical’ to the stage, and he serves as the executive producer of the show.
Ian Petrella (Randy Parker)Then: Ian Petrella is best remembered as Ralphie’s kid brother Randy, who eats like a “little piggy” and is so tightly squeezed into his snowsuit that he “can’t put his arms down!”
Now: Petrella had bit roles in several TV shows following ‘A Christmas Story,’ but halted his acting career and instead focused on his interest in animation and puppetry, a field in which he works today. In 2010, he gave ‘Christmas Story’ fans a treat when he gave tours of the original house used in the film.
Darren McGavin (The Old Man)Then: Darren McGavin starred in ‘A Christmas Story’ as ‘Old Man Parker,’ Ralphie’s furnace-loathing, leg lamp-loving, foul-mouthed father. At the end of the film, he comes through with the ultimate Christmas present: Ralphie’s Red Ryder BB gun.
Now: By the time he starred in ‘A Christmas Story,’ McGavin already had a successful acting career, with roles on Broadway, in film, and on television, most notably as the the title character in ‘Kolchak: The Night Stalker’. But it was his recurring role on ‘Murphy Brown’ in the late ’80s/early ’90s that garnered him an Emmy Award. Later on, McGavin continued his trend of playing fatherly characters, and starred as Adam Sandler’s dad in 1995′s ‘Billy Madison.’ McGavin died in 2006, at the age of 83.
Melinda Dillon (Mrs. Parker)Then: Melinda Dillon portrayed Ralphie’s stern-but-loving mother, who was the first to utter that dreaded phrase: “You’ll shoot your eye out!” Prior to ‘A Christmas Story,’ Dillon was an Academy Award-nominated actress, with her roles in ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ and ‘Absence of Malice’ garnering her critical acclaim.
Now: Since starring in ‘A Christmas Story,’ Dillon has mostly kept to herself, though she has had more than 20 credits to her name. Her most recent role was a recurring guest appearance on the 2007 TV show, ‘Heartland.’
Scott Schwartz (Flick)Then: Scott Schwartz played Ralphie’s friend Flick, who, on a dare, gets his tongue “thuck” to a frozen flagpole in one of the film’s most memorable scenes.
Now: Following ‘A Christmas Story,’ Schwartz put his tongue, to, um, other uses in the adult film industry, appearing in both sexual and non-sexual roles in countless porn movies. “Scotty,” as he was known in the industry, quit the scene in 2000 and instead focused on getting back into mainstream films. When this did not prove successful, Schwartz, who owns a movie and sports memorabilia store, instead created a line of celebrity trading cards and wrote for a sports card magazine. He is reportedly working on a memoir.
R.D. Robb (Schwartz)Then: R.D. Robb played Schwartz, Ralphie’s wise-cracking friend who famously “triple dog dared” Flick to stick his tongue to the flagpole. Schwartz was also Ralphie’s scapegoat when asked how he learned the expression, “Oh, fudge.”
Now: After ‘A Christmas Story,’ Robb landed small roles in ‘The Brady Bunch Movie,’ ‘Matilda,’ and the Keri Russell movie ‘Eight Days a Week.’ He later focused his career on the other side of the camera, directing ‘Don’s Plum,’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Kevin Connolly and other A-list actors. Robb also became a producer, and even worked on a film called ‘Triple Dog,’ about a game of truth-or-dare. Coincidence? We think not.
Zack Ward (Scut Farkus)Then: Zack Ward portrayed yellow-eyed, green-toothed schoolyard bully Scut Farkus, who eventually “gets his” when Ralphie beats him up in a fit of rage.
Now: Since playing the meanest bully this side of Indiana, Ward has over 80 film and television credits to his name, including a recurring role on ‘All of Us,’ a turn in 2007′s blockbuster ‘Transformers’ and, most recently, a guest appearance on the Melissa McCarthy comedy ‘Mike & Molly.’ In 2012, Ward settled a case with National Entertainment Collectibles Association after suing the company for making a ‘Christmas Story’ board game and allegedly using his image without permission.
Yano Anaya (Grover Dill)Then: Yano Anaya played Scut Farkus’ “toadie” sidekick, Grover Dill, who aided his pal in torturing Ralphie and his friends.
Now: Before retiring from acting in the late ’80s, Anaya had memorable roles in the Van Halen music video, ‘Hot For Teacher,’ and as the newspaper boy in ‘Better Off Dead…’ In 2008, Anaya appeared with the majority of ‘Christmas Story’ cast for a behind-the-scenes documentary called ‘Untold Christmas Story.’ According to LinkedIn, Anaya is now the Personal Trainer Program Director at the Atlanta School of Massage in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jean Shepherd (Adult Ralphie/Narrator)Then: Jean Shepherd brought ‘A Christmas Story’ to life, as the creator, writer, and narrator of the classic Christmas tale, which was loosely based on his own childhood Christmas (detailed in his book, ‘In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.’) Shepherd’s smooth voice and penchant for detail made him one of the greatest radio personalities and raconteurs of all-time. It is also a little-known fact that Shepherd has a cameo appearance in ‘A Christmas Story’ as the bearded man in line at Higbee’s who scolds Ralphie.
Now: After ‘A Christmas Story,’ Shepherd continued to regale audiences with his semi-autobiographical childhood tales in film, live shows, and on TV — most notably on PBS, which ran several of his Parker Family stories. Unfortunately, we were unable to find a recent photo of him. He died of natural causes in 1999, at the age of 78.
Tedde Moore (Miss Shields)Then: Actress Tedde Moore played Ralphie’s kind-hearted-but-firm 4th grade teacher Miss Shields, who, despite being bribed by an enormous fruit basket, still gives Ralphie a C+ on his “What I Want For Christmas” theme.
Now: Moore reprised her role as Miss Shields in the lesser-known ‘Christmas Story’ sequel, ‘It Runs in the Family: My Summer Story,’ and is the only actor (apart from narrator Jean Shepherd) who appears in both films. Moore has continued to act, and has become a drama coach and acting teacher, as well. In 2011, she had a recurring role on mini-series ‘The Kennedys,’ and starred as Mrs. Claus in the Hallmark Christmas film, ‘Mistletoe Over Manhattan.’
Jeff Gillen (Santa Claus)Then: Jeff Gillen’s red-nosed, nightmarish department store Santa was so scary that kids peed their pants and screamed the whole way down the slide after meeting him. ‘A Christmas Story’ marked Gillen’s second film with director Bob Clark; the two had previously worked together on the comedy-horror film ‘Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things.’
Now: After ‘A Christmas Story,’ Gillen only appeared in two more films before his untimely death from a heart attack in 1995 (which is why we don’t have a recent pic of him). Instead, he went on to found Great Southern Studios in Miami, which, to this day, provides films with scenery, set design, props, and everything else under the sun.

Great posts Lucie!

I remember the first time I watched this, the part with the Santa and Ralphie going down the slide I laughed my head off.

We always put this on during the Christmas Eve/Day marathon. I have lots of pics of us during Christmas Eve/Day with the moving on the tv in the background.

I love the end when the parents are looking at the tree with the snow falling.

Sugarplum-
I always put the marathon on as well. Sometimes in the middle of the hustle and bustle, I turn to the channel just to see what part it's on.

My absolute favorite scene is also the one with the parents at the end. Love it. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy!

I'm getting excited to watch!!

I bought the VCR tape of this movie many years ago so I can watch it whenever, but I always watch the marathon. Yes, I still have and use a VCR, in addition to the blu-ray player and DVR, lol. I never get to see the entire thing though anymore. It will be fun to watch it in its entirety.

Throughly enjoyed it! Very much!

And yes, I cried during the final scene of the parents sitting by the tree looking out at the snow.

Ok. Got to watch it Monday night. I had a cold. So ... sat down to watch it. Trouble is with DVD's from the library ... scratches ... had several spots that got stuck. But all in all ... got to see it. It was fun and silly. Gosh, and then he gets his gun and it back kicks him in the cheek! Ack! Poor kid! Steps on his glasses ... he seems kind of like a Charlie Brown ... nothing goes right.
