Gift for Earning Master's Degree??

Several family members have either earned or are about to earn their master's degree? What are your feelings about gifts for that?

DS earned his last year, and we didn't give him anything. Now, Dniece is graduating Saturday and DsonIL will graduate in May. Should I "backtrack" and give something to DS and to those who are graduating this year? DDIL begins working on hers this summer, and DD20 will earn hers in about 2-3 years.

Help! I need opinions!

If you didn't give DS anything I think you should just stick with no gifts. At some point adults can deal with no gifts.

I agree gifts have to stop at some point. I never gave gifts for graduations... sometimes a card.

I'd send a card. Gifts aren't really necessary unless you are invited to a formal celebration.

Thanks, everyone. DD24 and I were at Sam's Monday evening, and there was a set of luggage I commented on that I could get it for DsonIL for Christmas because he's been wanting some like it. She said, "Or you could get it for him for graduation for his master's." I'm sure my face looked stunned because I had made no plans to give him a gift. Now, I'm wondering if his parents will expect me to give a gift. If I didn't do it for my own son, I agree that I shouldn't for anyone else, just a card, but was wondering how you all would deal with it.

Just tell DD24 that you do not plan to give gifts for Master's Degrees and she should feel free to go ahead and get it for him.

When I got my Master's Degree- we just went out to dinner to celebrate. It was low key just as I wanted. No gifts were given. I think my Mum may have given me a card. When I graduated from my Bachelors- Mum and Dad bought me some lovely pearls that I wanted. My best friends Dad gave a cashmere overcoat to all of the girls in our friendship group- but he did own the coat factory. He said that all teachers needed a warm coat to wear on the playground. 28 years later I am still wearing it- is superb quality and a classic, timeless design.

Thanks, everyone. All will be taken into consideration. I did buy the luggage because it was such a good price, but it's put up for Christmas. If I change my mind, I can give it for the graduation.

MissJane, glad you got the luggage and you have put it away for Christmas.
I remember my dad saying that if you do for one you have to do for all. So I am very careful not to set a precedence if I can't afford to continue it.
