2025 was a year of major change for me. In January I retired and in April DH and I moved to our retirement home in the country. The time since then has flown by and I am keenly aware that I need to focus on getting things done or else the weeks go by and I am falling behind. I have noticed that as I get older I do have to work harder to achieve what I want to, it just does not happen it needs constant work.

I am happy with the life that I have here. It is simple and it works for DH and I. The things I enjoy most are organising events (I like the organising more than the event most times), getting together with my family, being comfortable in my home. Simple meals, day trips, shopping trips, watching a good movie. I don't need fancy things to make me happy. We have fallen into a routine here which suits us but I do want to keep setting goals and make plans so that we don't fall into a rut. Most of these goals are the same as last year.....simple things

Here are some goals for 2026.

*Read 10 books. I am keen to include some "how to" books in my reading list.

*Continue meal prep.

*Try to not have so much food on hand. Be aware of use by dates. A good buy is not a bargain if we need to toss it because it is past its date.

*Do a few more crafts. I joined Knit and natter in 2025 and thoroughly enjoyed the companionship and the crafting.

*Revisit WOTY, Lessons learned and here at the beginning of each new season to refresh. My word this year is comfortable.

*Maintain every room in the new house. Make our home comfortable and work for us. It is OK to be rid of things that do not work for us. Use what I have in this house. I have nice things and it is OK to use them. Really think about what comes into the house, we do not have the room for clutter.

*Try to find a purpose and some joy in each day.

*We will do more baking days and maybe do some more batch cooking. Learn new skills such as canning, jam making etc.
Try to use every single item that we buy or make. A no waste way of life.

*Keep working on my 5 chores a week and meal planning, it works for me.

*Continue with the retirement budget, be aware of what we spend. Be careful.

*Explore our surroundings, put myself out there and find some new friends

*Celebrate my family, they are a small but loyal tribe.

*Finding the balance between keeping busy and getting some me time.

*Modify the HGP to work in this new home. September HGP worked well but it does need tweaking.

*Try to make natural cleaners to replace some of the chemicals we use. Saves space and money.

And as a reminder......lessons learned in 2025

Christmas was not what I expected, it was the most unconventional Christmas I think I have ever had. It was fine but I would rather not repeat it. DH and I had Christmas on the 20th as we were house sitting for DD who was on holidays. I do struggle when plans change, I find it hard to adapt. I also struggle with making the celebrations wonderful for my family who are now all adults. I miss the Christmas sparkle from years past. Christmas nowadays is not bad, just different and I have to try and remember that.

What worked
  • Shopping for gifts through the whole year meant no last minute rush. Also helped with the budget.
  • Paring down on stocking fillers and gifts made things a bit more enjoyable.
  • Cards written and mailed by November 25th. This worked well. Making sure I have money in the budget to send cards.
  • Did not decorate with the exception of the tree. I put up a very small tree. I do not want to do a lot of decorating if we are not here. For the near future our Christmas celebrations will be in Canberra. I am happy with that.
  • Wrapping was done by mid November. A big job out of the way as I do not enjoy wrapping. It left us time to purchase more if needed.
  • Having money on the supermarket rewards card if needed.
  • Having an idea of what meals we were serving and shopping early took the strain of both time and budget.
  • Being retired this year meant that there was plenty of time to plan and get things done.
  • Cutting back on baking, still having what we liked but just not so much of it.
  • Cutting back on Christmas dinner was a success. There was still a great variety but much less. It was delicious.
  • Spending time in CIJ to double check plans etc.
  • DH advent calendar was a hit, will do it again.
What did not work
  • I need to really give much more thought to what I am giving. I need to consider more useful items especially for DD and DSoniL.
  • I need to give DH some ideas of what to buy for me. There was nothing under the tree for me with the exception of one thing and that made DH uncomfortable.
  • Did not look at Christmas lights.
  • Need to think of how to connect with DS more. I would like him to be more involved but not sure how to do this with him living so far away.
  • Need to have enough in the budget to enable me to send DS's presents to him.
  • Need to rethink Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day breakfast. This was a bust as we were house sitting for DD. I need to put more thought into this.
For next year
  • Work just a little harder to make things a little better. I have the time
  • Useful and thoughtful gifts.
  • Try not to have too much extra food on hand. This was much better than last year but still too much.
  • Try to tweak things a little, just go that extra mile.
  • Put gift tags on everything, make a bit more of an effort with wrapping.
  • Be prepared to be flexible. Not sure what the plans will be for Christmas Eve, breakfast and dinner for Christmas day etc. Plan as per usual but be ready for plans to change.
  • Look at a combination of HGP and HHP. There are benefits in doing both.

I'm with you on that. I'll do more on the pluses and minuses later.

I am struggling with a word of the year and goal setting for 2026. This is new territory for me. I'm wondering if it is because my goal had been getting all of my children to graduate high school and being available to them up until that point. My first four dds were NICU babies so it was a big deal for me. To see all five of my children graduate was a dream come true.

I am going to give this some more thought today.

@sweetpumkinpye Great read over your post. :) I could say much of the same in a lot of your areas.

I had mentioned on one of these MHH threads that I went ahead and gave DH and DS a list for me. DH's done "ok" over the years but ... most things with my name were really "for the family" kinds of things. Which is fine as they have been good items and we three have used them. But ... well ... I wished for a little more personal girly fun items!

So, the list I gave them to choose from really WORKED well. ;) DS did get out at least once to shop with dad for me. He got my coconut dark chocolate creams from our local candy shop and he picked out my new slippers! They are like cranberry furry open toe thong ... LOL ... something I would not have ever picked out for myself, but ya know ...they are really comfy and I feel like Za Za Gabore from Green Acres. I need a flowing night gown now. LOL

And all the little other things were great. And when DS couldn't get out to the store ... DH actually went and picked out stuff ... like I just mentioned "tea" ... and DH get an organic immune boost tea in a pretty pink box with flowers and tigers on it! Him just doing THAT was an amazing gift. :)

Jampss- That is so cute about the slippers! Move over, Zsa Zsa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm just beginning to flesh out my goals. I know I want to be:
* Get on a work out schedule and stick with it (I think I have this goal every year- ha ha)
* Continue with my deep cleaning, paring down and organizing- 2025 I did: coat closet, linen closet, Christmas stuff.
Haven't figured out what I will tackle in 2026. More Christmas stuff will go.
* I would like to start meditating again. I think my brain and soul are going to need it with what is going on with work.

I REALLY need to be mindful of taking care of myself. The first half of the year is going to be A LOT at work and to be honest,
I'm terrified. How will I pull this off?! Two humongous projects going at the same time. I'm trying not to have anxiety over it.

I need to:
Get proper rest and sleep
Get proper nutrition
Stay hydrated
Move my body
Spend time in prayer, meditation and silence

We have so much stuff.
I do notice that after the great decluttering just before we moved that things are starting to find their way back into the house. Something that I need to be aware of.

My 2026 goals are similar to last year. Being present to myself means self-care comes first, daily.

Daily Self Care

  • Morning stretches and scripture reflection
  • Afternoon or evening stretches/walks.
  • Elliptical in winter and autumn.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables and protein in simplest form.
  • Take vitamins.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Listen to positive, uplifting music.

Weekly Self Care

  • Reading
    • American History
    • Genealogy
    • Finances
  • Research
    • Keep working on Rural Genealogy Timeline.
    • Write up 4 bios.
  • Photography - A Moment in the Life
  • Weekly Reflection on Life Lived
Monthly Self Care
  • Monthly Reflection
  • Seasonal/Holiday Foods, Drinks, Scents, Activities
Home
  • Annual decluttering of shelves, cabinets and drawers in the house.
  • Online decluttering of screenshots, extra photos, emails, etc.
  • Ultimately, I want each room in the house to have a calm and restful ambiance. I want my senses to say, "Ahh... this is a great place to rest my head."
  • Have seasonal scents in the kitchen, bath and living room that make me smile.

I need to be aware of how hot things are here. It started heating up in September and is still hot now.
I am about to start my pre Winter prep, try and get all the heavy work done while the weather is still reasonable. Things like washing the curtains and spot cleaning the mattress and couch need to be done soon so that they can dry before being used again.

This year I may need to start HGP slightly earlier before it gets too hot and set up a longer maintenance program. I have worked on a room a week over the last few weeks and that has worked well in keeping things on track.
Will need to make a note of this in my planner as a reminder.

The beginning of a new season here....Autumn. Just reading back over what I would like to achieve with my days this year and making sure that I am on track. So far doing ok but I do know that it is easy to fall off the wagon so to speak so a gentle reminder never hurts, something that I do need every now and then.
The year is marching on very quickly so I must be mindful of that and make sure I get the most out of my weeks.

In front of my computer
I am putting down “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” as our Christmas tree theme so will be looking for ideas. Doubt I could talk the guys into white suits for our Christmas photo.

I have a few bunnies up for Easter. Will drag the rest up once I finish moving the Christmas boxes in the basement.

The beginning of Winter here for us in the Southern Hemisphere and thought it was time to check in and see how I am going with the goals and plans that I set at the beginning of the year. Lets see!!!!

*Read 10 books. I am keen to include some "how to" books in my reading list. I have read 5

*Continue meal prep. This is working.

*Try to not have so much food on hand. Be aware of use by dates. A good buy is not a bargain if we need to toss it because it is past its date.
We are doing OK with this. We probably have more food on hand then needed but we are worried about food/petrol shortages.

*Do a few more crafts. I joined Knit and natter in 2025 and thoroughly enjoyed the companionship and the crafting.
Doing well here. Have donated 9 crocheted lap blankets and 5 or 6 knitted hats to the library. I have also worked on baby items for DD. Will do more over Winter.

*Revisit WOTY, Lessons learned and here at the beginning of each new season to refresh. My word this year is comfortable. Done

*Maintain every room in the new house. Make our home comfortable and work for us. It is OK to be rid of things that do not work for us. Use what I have in this house. I have nice things and it is OK to use them. Really think about what comes into the house, we do not have the room for clutter. Am becoming aware of stuff creeping back in. Will do a declutter over Winter and see what I can be rid of.

*Try to find a purpose and some joy in each day. Working on this

*We will do more baking days and maybe do some more batch cooking. Learn new skills such as canning, jam making etc.
Try to use every single item that we buy or make. A no waste way of life. Not doing any baking. Need to watch what I eat so no point baking and not being able to eat it. The no waste is going OK.

*Keep working on my 5 chores a week and meal planning, it works for me. This works!

*Continue with the retirement budget, be aware of what we spend. Be careful. Yes, this is working OK.

*Explore our surroundings, put myself out there and find some new friends. I have found a few more friend and I am enjoying their company. Not doing any travel as the petrol is too expensive.

*Celebrate my family, they are a small but loyal tribe. Always.

*Finding the balance between keeping busy and getting some me time. I still struggle with the balance. Me time is getting better but I still like to keep busy.

*Modify the HGP to work in this new home. September HGP worked well but it does need tweaking. Will keep looking at this. Need to start earlier before it gets too hot and maintain for longer.

*Try to make natural cleaners to replace some of the chemicals we use. Saves space and money. Have not looked at this yet. Still have quite a few cleaners here to use up.

Have you tried giving a healthier spin on your baking? I am always tweaking recipes - like reducing sugar, adding in high protein yogurt, more fruits etc.

I do need to look into this a bit more. There are diabetic magazines that feature low carb/sugar recipes. I just haven't taken the time to look through them.
