The kids gifts from DH and me are their stockings. Somewhere I heard a saying that for birthday, Christmas, etc. gifts, a child should receive "something they want, something they need, something to play with, and something to read." So that is what I try to do with their stockings. For "want" and "play with" (essentially the same thing in our house), they get a toys that fit into the stocking - barbie, small lego sets, WebKinz, etc. For "need" I've given fun/decorated socks, pencils with their names engraved for school, a wallet, slippers. And of course there is a book to "read".
