Since having Ds four years ago, DH and I have not really celebrated New Year's Eve like we used to - it's hard to find a sitter who doesn't have plans and can stay out so late. With that said, I would like to start a new tradition at our house of a New Year's Day drop in for close friends and neighbors. I need ideas! Or course, we'll have football on tv for the guys and spiced cider and other concotions to drink. And what a great way to use up those leftover cookies and treats! What I am looking for is some type of favor or token to celebrate the new year. Any ideas??

Why not try a new years Day tree decorated with clear ornaments-inside the ornament include some glitter, confetti, curly ribbon and a new year's wish for each person. Everyone can pick one off the tree before they leave-Or you could put a funny fortune in each one! You could also use new years eve hats filled with tissue and a favor and hang those on the tree! :tree:

I was going to suggest the same thing. Maybe you can also BAKE fortune cookies and fill with a new years fortune!!!

We have a skating party on New Years day. It is a potluck meal and wonderful. We have also done a sledding party and monopoly marathon!

The lasy couple years my sister hosted and cooked a big turkey dinner!

I'm guessing you don't have turkey at Christmas! We're always sick of turkey by then! :thud:
It sounds like you have fun! We would like to have a skating party for DS3's b-day in Feb. but it all depends on the weather as we would use the outdoor rink. :skate:

:friendly: We have turkey on Christmas day too! I know crazy, but we do not often have many leftovers with all the men in my family!

We cook "big" meals for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day (actually a brunch) - then New Years Eve and New Years Day  The 12 days of Christmas is a lot of cooking for us.

We sometimes have turkey, as well. I love it, could eat it every week. :turkey:

I wish we lived where we could have skating parties...I always thought that sounded like so much fun when I would read about them in books! :skate:

Having something on New Year's Day sounds like a lot of fun! I may have to steal that idea.

The last two years oldest dd and I have gone to a friends while dh and little dd stay home. She is too young to keep out that late and she wouldn't do well with the noise if we had people in. But New Year's Day would be great!

:happybd: These guys are great. Just replace the Happy Birthday with Happy New Year!!

In their catalog, Yankee Candle has a clear votive cup that you can personalize with a clear label that can say anything you want it to..._______ family Thanksgiving; Happy New Year 08...whatever. They are really cute. I'm thinking about doing some of these for Thanksgiving and making them myself. I think you could either get clear labels and print them or use regular mailing labels with a decorative sticker and personalize them.

Or, you could print something on vellum and use doublestick tape and tape it to the votive cup. I love the look of clear vellum on a clear glass votive cup with the candlelight shining through. Just a thought!! :globe:

One year a group of us got together and played bunco until midnight. We put all the kids down stairs with movies and games. We had kids from 2 - 14 down there. The older ones looked after the younger ones. Most of the younger kids fell asleep and the older kids stayed up and got to have sprakling cider and goodies for helping out. The adults had a blast playing bunco and eating leftover Christmas cookies and other Christmas goodies we got on clearance.

My SIL redecorates her tree. She put party hats, blowers, and those clear wine glasses in hers, and any other things that have Happy New Year's on it. We gather over there on New Year's Eve and at midnight the kids get to get the stuff off the tree and put on the hats, blow the blowers, and in the glasses they get sparking apple cider. They think they are so big. The kids have the best time.

We also have on the ball games but we also set up in her dining room a couple of tables and we play board games or card games. The adults have fun playing the games. The kids goes downstairs to their basement and play down there.

My inlaws usually watch my children on New Year's eve, not sure if that will happen this year because of the baby but we will see. Anyway, my husband and I usually go the casino for a few hours, then come home and watch tv. On New Year's day we go to my inlaws for the day and have black eyed peas and hog gawls...In Arkansas here.

I think your New Year's open house sounds like a great idea. Young children do make it hard to go out on New Year's Eve. It's been years since DH and I did anything that night. In fact, I'm usually the only one left awake at midnight!

Other people have given you great ideas for favors, but here's one more... As some have mentioned, black eyed peas are a traditional New Year's food and considered good luck. You could do some type of a cute meal kit, with black eyed peas, seasonings, and cornbread mix, and attach a little note about it being good luck.

I know there are other foods that are traditional to eat on New Year's day and considered to be good luck as well that you may be able to incorporate into a favor. I'm off to google to find out!

Well, I looked around and the only other common New Year's foods I could find for the US were cabbage and collard greens. These just don't lend themselves to a "meal kit" as well as black eyed peas!

I found a couple of theories about why they are lucky... One is that they represent coins, while the greens (collard and cabbage) represent paper money. Also, the peas swell when cooked, representing fruitfulness and prosperity. The other "lucky" theory I found was an old phrase, "Eat poor on New Year's, eat fat the rest of the year."

In the South Hog Gawl is part of the meal too. Not sure what it represents...maybe the part of eating cheap on New Years, and eating good the rest of the year.

The past two years the women of the family have had a New Years Day tea. We use to do it Christmas Eve but as the family has grown it was harder to get everyone together then. Some worked retail and could not get off work. It is easier for everyone to make New Years Day and gives us something to look forward to after Christmas.

My mom and grandmom have always made black eyed peas for New Years. Another tradition my grandmother has is that the first person who walks through her door on New Years Day must be a male. I don't know why but it must be done.
