Let’s start off with some Thanksgiving movies!
I’m sure we all know Trains, Planes and Automobiles with John Candy driving Steve Martin crazy as they head home for the holiday, but there’s also
Pieces of April starring Katie Holmes as a quirky New Yorker who is making her first Thanksgiving dinner for her dysfunctional family in a tiny apartment, and
What’s Cooking about four families from different cultures preparing for the big holiday.
I’ve watched them all and they’re all good movies.
Now let’s take a look at movies that might or might not be Christmas movies.
The public has spoken and Die Hard with Bruce Willis is officially a Christmas movie but what about:
Trading Places, my personal favorite
Little Women – the 1994 version
Bridget Jones Diary – remember the ugly sweater
While You Were Sleeping – a family Christmas dinner
The Lion in Winter - Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine having a nice English Christmas with the family.
The Holdovers – Christmas bonding at a deserted boarding school
…and even The Godfather which shows Michael and Kay Christmas shopping while violence is taking place
Would love to hear your feelings on these and other controversial Christmas movies.
Magazines – since I have made it my personal mission to support Barnes and Noble I buy almost all the Christmas/holiday issues of all the cooking and lifestyle magazines in existence from Bon Appetite to Southern Living. But, if you don’t want to support B & N they are mostly all available at your local library.
Books – if you haven’t read the books I recommended during Christmas in July now is the time for you to catch up! I did read another book called;
The Christmas Connection by Evie James. Interestingly, I was reading this book about 30 miles from where it takes place, in upstate NY, in Saratoga Springs. In it, Mr. Captain and Stinkerbelle find love during a blizzard. Lots of NY snark but, be warned, there’s also a lot of graphic sex.
Crafts – people are doing a lot of things with the pool noodles that you can get fairly cheaply at Dollar Tree, The crafters at Hometalk always have some great ideas
and if you Google Pool Noodle Crafts for Christmas you’ll find a lot of videos.
Finally, if you’re looking for a new crafter to follow I recommend The Gooch. Mr Gooch is a former Ringling Brothers Circus clown who now posts neat DIY’s. He’s really enthusiastic and fun to watch. I also follow BrooklynB. She has some offbeat ideas as well as an occasional recipe.
Let’s all enjoy November! The holidays are almost here!
