National Coupon Month
National Coupon Clipping Month
Heather Stapf
Most of us snip them every Sunday. It was a way of growing up, to help around the house. Picking up the scissors, rooting through the Sunday Sun, and clipping those coupons.
Did you know that September is considered National Coupon Clipping Month? Probably not, which is why I must share some brief tidbits about the history of coupons.
It all started in 1894 when Asa Candler (a druggist who bought the formula for Coca Cola) gave out hand written tickets for a free glass. In 1895, C.W. Post (maker of Grape Nuts) distributed coupons for one cent off towards his cereal.
Largely in part of the Great Depression did coupons make a big impact in the American household. 1957 is when the coupon industry was born, thanks to the development of the Nielsen Coupon Clearing House.
By 1975, coupon popularity began to grow again. It was estimated that over 35 billion coupons were circulated that year and that 65 percent of American households were clipping coupons.
That all leads us to the celebration of the 112th birthday of the coupon. Saving money is important, especially in a time when prices for common goods (such as gas) have begun to rise. For college students, shaving costs is important and that earns them an A+.
Next time you see a coupon, clip it out and use it. Instead of paying $3.99 for a box of cereal, you could save a whole 25 cents!
