An 1830s Independence Day Celebration
July 4

Celebrate this true American Holiday in grand style as you mingle with citizens and local militia, celebrating the birthday of American freedom. Watch as the citizens parade through the village to the sounds of fifes and drums.

Listen to a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence on the Common, and step up to add your own "John Hancock" to an oversized reproduction of the document.

During this election year, Old Sturbridge Village takes a look at what early New Englanders in the countryside would have seen and heard related to the Election of 1840: a giant campaign ball like one used during William Henry Harrison's campaign will roll as part of the Independence Day procession, and also a log cabin (a symbol of Harrison's campaign) atop a wagon pulled by oxen.
