Every year commercial broadcast radio stations all across the U.S. flip to all Christmas music in October and November. In fact at the time of this post there are 20 stations playing Christmas and it ain't even Thanksgiving!

Most of these stations will be listed at a webpage at http://www.100000watts.com/specials.asp .

However, the best and most diverse Christmas music and shows come from public radio in my humble opinion. Each year I look for such programming by searching public radio station holiday schedules. Hopefully you will look for and post your local public radio station schedules

Find your local pubilc radio station at: http://www.npr.org/stations/

I'll list what I find too!

Host John Birge creates a thoughtful, contemporary reflection on the meaning of the holiday—perfect for broadcast while families gather at the table to share common blessings. Deepak Chopra, celebrated writer on spirituality and wellness, and Nigella Lawson, British food writer who appears on NPR's Morning Edition, BBC television, and the Food Network, are featured. Classical music is the heart and soul of Giving Thanks, and this year's selections include Simple Gifts from Yo-Yo Ma, a hymn of Thanksgiving from Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, the autumnal lyricism of Mark O'Connor's American Seasons, and a cornucopia of Bach. Between the music, it's a contemporary celebration of spirit of Gratitude.

American Routes Radio

American Routes Radio (one of my favorites) will air their Christmas radio show on public radio stations across the U.S. on the weekend of Christmas this year. Depending on your station schedule, the show can run anytime from Friday, Christmas Eve to Sunday, December 26.

This year is a repeat of the 2007 show featuring Diana Krall & The Heath Brothers. As such the show is archived for an online listen if you want to get the jump on the radio broadcast.

Xmas with Diana Krall and the Heath Brothers

There's no place like home for the holidays. Our guests for this holiday version of American Routes wax nostalgically in words and music. Jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall recalls her childhood on Vancouver Island and how those traditions are being carried on in her own home today. Jimmy and Tootie Heath of the Heath Brothers reminisce about a life in jazz and late brother Percy. Baby, it's cold outside. Stay in, snuggle up and enjoy.
