House & Holidays Plan Week 5: Guest Room Week

Prepare for holiday hospitality this week, in the House & Holidays Plan: it's Guest Room Week!
Hospitality is a core value of the Christmas holiday season; time to plan for guests!
This week in the House and Holidays Plan, we'll "think hospitality" as we prepare for house guests and focus on the guest room.
No guest room? Take aim on the multi-function area that houses sleepover guests; otherwise, it's another bonus room week!
Our holiday prep focus turns to decor, as we begin planning seasonal decorations. A decor declutter clears surfaces in time to decorate for autumn.
Finally, we'll schedule houseguests and build a little "pamper basket" to welcome them, as we begin writing Christmas cards or signing holiday letters.

This Week's Focus: Guest Room or Bonus Room

Making ready for guests this year? Whether your home includes a designated guest room, or you bed down visitors in a multi-use area, it's time to prepare for holiday houseguests.
This week, we'll check on all the items we need to extend hospitality, and clean and organize any areas devoted to visitors. As we go, we'll consider what makes a welcoming home, and find ways to make our guests feel cherished and comfortable.
In holiday prep, we'll begin thinking about holiday decorations, make a first-of-the-month status check, and begin decorating for Autumn. Try these resources to jumpstart your holiday home:

This Week's Household Checklist

  • Declutter, clean and organize guest areas. Whether your household has a dedicated guest room or a simple fold-out sofa bed, declutter, organize and clean the area you use to host guests.
  • No guestroom or guest space? Take a bonus week, tackling another area of the household or catching up on earlier assignments.

This Week's Holiday Prep Checklist

  • Status Check! Review the progress of the House and Holidays Plan on the first day of the month. If you're falling behind, adjust goals to a more realistic level.
  • Begin planning holiday decorating. Check magazines, library books and the Web for decor inspiration. Use a printable room-by-room decor planner to coordinate decor plans.
  • Inventory holiday decorations. Make a quick inspection and determine what you have to work with. Will you need to replace or upgrade decor items this year? Make a note on the decor inventory form.
  • Declutter before you decorate for autumn. Do your visual field a favor with a quick decor declutter. A clean sweep now makes holiday decorations all the more impressive!
  • Decorate for autumn. Choose "generic" decor items. Nearer to Halloween, add a few Halloween items which can be removed easily after the holiday. Come November 1, swap them out for Thanksgiving decorations.
  • Schedule houseguest stays. Grab calendars and check in with family about travel plans. Will you host houseguests this year?
  • Make a guest room "pamper basket". Guests feel welcomed when the guestroom or guest area boasts a simple basket of toiletries and personal care supplies. Add a coffeemaker and beverage supplies for a "bed and breakfast" touch.
  • Continue working on Christmas cards. Divide the Christmas card list into five sections. Complete one section this week. Goal: to be finished writing, signing and addressing cards by November 15.

What are you doing this week?

Guest room is done. Complete with guests. LC1 is closing on a different house and it isn’t complete yet so she is staying with us along with her just turned 10 today son. This was good practice for me. I could use some more pillows and I need flat sheets for a twin and queen size bed. Either I decluttered them or they are packed some where strange.

Week 5 - House Room Week (Guest Room)

This is a light week for me as the Guest Room is in good shape. Gives me a week to catch up on everything I'm behind on. It's a hefty list but hoping I can knock some of this out this week. It's also my get-in-shape time so I have lots of room for holiday cookies later. :) This should give me some of the extra energy I'll need now. Fingers crossed. This is also the week I'm moving back my bedtime for earlier sleep, locking away the wine, and killing weeknight TV in favor of a good book. (TV is a bad summer habit for our family. I try to keep our Netflix binges to the weekends during the winter. :)

Here's my current list. Pulled from what I missed in the earlier weeks. Nice to finally have this list all in one place!

House:
  • Clean faster/smarter. -- Right?! LOL!
  • Get a Reality Check on the budget & spending. Need to focus. Lots of change right now.
  • Schedule houseguest stays. - Need flight dates. Need to confirm one last kid.
  • Continue decluttering a Child's Room -- The kid that is home is learning this plan and is decluttering.
  • Guest Room Set up -- Good to go. Needs a new lamp. On the list.
  • Set aside a gift closet & inventory any previously-purchased gifts. -- Clearing the attic today..
  • Decor declutter. -- I'm thinking one of my Autumn table runners is looking dated. :-/
  • Chimney cleaned for season -- Done. And Wood Stove lit for the winter.
  • Ponder candle strategy -- DD says they cause cancer. Wants us to make our own this year. Ordering kit.
  • Decorate for autumn. -- Done.

Holiday:
  • Begin collecting stocking stuffers. -- Changing it up this year. Less chocolate. More salt.
  • Plan Halloween Box to mail to DS -- Got some stuff already. Will include Trader Joes Pumpkin Pancake Mix.
  • Begin planning holiday decor. Check Pinterest Board. -- Working on the mantel. Needs ooooomph!
  • Inventory holiday decorations. - Checking my notes. I need lights. And maybe another remote.
  • Ponder Christmas Cards. I should send a letter....
  • Inventory gift wrap & mailing supplies. -- I need stamps.. Good on wrapping paper.
  • Print address labels for Christmas cards - Need more labels....
  • Plan personal pampering sessions, and add them to December's calendar. -- Need talk to DD re calendar.
  • What is the Family Gift this year? Last several years the "gift" has been airfare to get everyone here. Might be same this year. Or an experience. Except for tech stuff we all prefer to put the money into experiences now. Nothing specific in mind yet.....

I'm moving back my bedtime for earlier sleep, locking away the wine, and killing weeknight TV in favor of a good book.
I've been doing this for a few weeks now and I feel real good in the morning after I do stretches and remembering my vitamins. I also added a green smoothie for lunch most days. I'm hoping this helps with the busyness of life during these next few months.

Oh, good grief! I thought I posted my list on Sunday. Sigh...

Household Checklist

  • Declutter, clean and organize paperwork. That just didn't happen again this week. I'm saving it for January for sure.

Holiday Prep Checklist

  • Do a Status Check. Overall, I'm happy with what I'm doing and where I am so far.
  • Begin planning holiday decorating. I'm doing college visits this year so I'll get up decorations when I can and if it is minimal, I'm okay with it.
  • Inventory holiday decorations. Check “Post Christmas 2022” notes to see if anything was written down. I didn't have any notes written about replacing or changing the decorations.
  • Continue working on Christmas cards.
