In the 1940’s, gifts were simpler and provided for home entertainment among both children and adults. Such toys included Silly Putty, and the Slinky, as well as the Magic 8 Ball, all introduced in the 1940's.

Mounds Metalcraft, a gardening tools company, began distributing toys and toy trucks that were made and patented by the Streater Company. These toys were immensely popular in the late 1940s and they soon became Mounds Metalcraft’s primary business. This 1940’s company changed its name in the 1950’s and became what is now known as Tonka Toys.

Legos were first introduced in the 1940’s and provided fun for both children and adults. Board games were also popular in the, including Candyland, Chutes & Ladders, Scrabble, and Clue.

Women often received practical gifts of soaps or aprons, although some advertisements in the 1940s included a list of home appliances for the wives to circle selections for their husbands to choose from.

Men may have received grooming items for shaving, and often received a gift of their favorite whiskey or bourbon or carton of their preferred cigarettes or cigars.

Bakelite was also popular during the war years and patriotic jewelry and pins were popular gifts for both women and men.

I hope you've enjoyed this look at Christmas in the 1940's. I've certainly enjoyed researching and writing it.

Love this! Tonka toys was a household name in my home growing up with two brothers. Never knew their history, very interesting. Thank you, Lori!

Wow! I had all of those toys - most remained popular at least through the 50's.

And, of course, my 42 year old son still gets Legos for Christmas.

I love the history lesson, how times have changed.
I love the bakelite brooches, they are lovely.

Wow I was not aware of Legos until I had kids and even then they were not very popular. I grew up with Lincoln logs. They were not fun to step on either since they rolled.

Growing up in an only child household I did not have a lot of toys. My aunt did not like the mess. There was a bumper pool table in the basement so I played on that or outside.

I never realized how "old" those toys were. We kids still had all those given to us as gifts in the late '60's and early '70's. And like it was said ... those toys are STILL around. :D

Santa and the cigarettes ...
