Welcome to the 60’s. From the election and assassination of JF Kennedy, the assassination of ML King, the escalation and protests of the Vietnam war to the first Super Bowl, man landing on the moon, peace, love, and rock and roll, the 60’s were turbulent but also lots of fun. As Dickens once said “it was the best of times, the worst of times”. Christmas in the 60’s was still focused on the family and fun but, moving from a “Father Knows Best” family heading towards the 70’s as “All in the Family”.

A short clip I found on you tube about Christmas in the 60’s:
Christmas in the 1960s - Life in America

Christmas card trends:
Cards in the 60’s had bright colors and a retro look.
Personalized cards became popular in the 60’s. Printing had evolved so personalized greetings along with names could be added. Color printing became more widely available so a Kodak color family photograph could be sent with a card.
Jacklyn Kennedy designed 2 Christmas cards, Glad Tidings (pictured) and Journey of the Magi in 1963. Produced by Hallmark, the sale to benefit the Kennedy Center.

Did you know? On Nov 4, 1962 the Post Office issued the first Christmas themed stamp. Cost 4 cents!

Books:
There were many amazing books published in the 60’s just not Christmas themed.

1960- The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding- 6 short stories by Agatha Christie (not published in the US)

1/1/1965 A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles Shultz.

In the theater:
Babes in Toy Land, December 14, 1961 by Disney. starting Ray Bolger, Annette Funicello,
Ed Wynn, Tommy Sands.

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, 1964. This was the first movie with a Mrs Claus, just 3 weeks before the release of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer with a Mrs Claus.

The Lion in Winter, 1968, set at Christmas time in 1183, about King Henry II. Staring Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn.

Live Performances:
The Nutcracker first came to the U.S. in the 40’s. In the 60’s it became a must see Christmas event which continues today.

Tomorrow music and tv.

Love the stamp! Too bad they don't do a reissue.

So much of this rings true and brings back a lot of memories! I remember having to pose for a family portrait, which was worthy of inclusion in the stack of Christmas cards my mother sent out. Thank you for this post!

That card of the woman dressed as a Christmas tree was funny. I love that stamp too. I wonder what the marketing idea was behind the January 1st release of the Charlie Brown book.

I love the video clip. I forgot about the toy catalogs. My grandmother worked for Sears, and the Wish Book was always eagerly anticipated. I love Babes in Toyland - we have it on DVD.

We lived in Belgium from the time I was 7-13 and my sister was 1-7 - Toyland at the Post Exchange was dismal so we eagerly awaited the Wish Book every year. We had a huge green faux leather rocking armchair that would fit the two of us and we'd sit there playing "Pick". I'd pick something on a page and then Barbara would pick something and we'd work our way through the Wish Book. Ah, memories!

I so love this. I was born 1965 so I am very interested in the 60's as it is my time although I cannot remember it.

What a fun post! Yes, the card with the girl wearing a tree is cute!! The video was great and I have family pics that look just like that. I was born in ‘63 so yeah not a lot of memories until towards ‘68-69.

And wow, I didn’t realize that the Christmas stamp isn’t that old after all!

The art from this era on Christmas cards is my favorite. I fact, it really does influence what I enjoy and buy in my home to this day. That's all
