Local news report this morning is attributing it to the continuing issue with avian bird flu. Until that is contained and controlled, the prices will be unstable.
According to reports we are on the up side of the bird flu with new chickens available for laying. Things should improve over the next few weeks as we head into Spring.

I have never in all my years experienced the food/supply problems that we have had over the last 5 years. Seems like there is always something that we are battling with.

Grocery store has turkey breasts on sale this week for 69 cents per pound. I picked up 3, 1 good size one to either roast or smoke and 2 smaller ones that will fit in my crock pot for those cold rainy fall days. I would have gotten more but there was a limit. I may go back at the end of the week and pick up 1 or 2 more.

Well I stopped back at the grocery store and snagged 2 more turkey breast .. another smaller one for the crock pot and a decent size one to roast or cook on my smoker. Got both for less than $9. The intent is to cook at least 1 a month for the next few months except for Nov and Dec. since I roast a large turkey for Thanksgiving and one between Christmas and New Years.

Good score on the turkey breasts. I'll have to see if there are any sales here.

I do like cooking up a turkey breast and doing a couple of sides for a holiday feel.

Apparently people were lined up out side this morning at the grocery store for turkey breast. Needless to say I didn’t get one, I stopped after my PT appointment. Oh well may be next time.

With Fall upon us and temps cooler, I've decided to resurrect my midweek Souper Supper. Instead of a full-blown "meat and potatoes" type dinner, Wednesday will be soup and salad or soup and a sandwich. I found my soup rotation list from 2022 and it reminded me of how good it was and how I felt when I invited a friend or two to share a souper supper with me. This week, I kicked it off with a pot of butternut squash soup and BLT sandwiches and shared it with my friend B. Hmmm ... next week, corn chowder? split pea? tomato?

Lori- Do you break down the butternut squash yourself or buy it already cut up?
I find butternut squash very hard to cut.

You can do it either way, but I find it more cost effective to use whole. I cut them in half with a meat cleaver — cut the top stem off, a little off the bottom if not stable, then stand it up and slice down the middle. Or, if they’re large, cut the stem and again at the neck, and cut that piece in half, and then cut the “bulb” in 2. Remove seeds, and roast cut side down in an oiled baking dish. Once roasted, I’ll cool for a half hour or so and scoop out all of the flesh. Depending on my schedule, I may do this a day or two prior and refrigerate the cooked squash. I prefer to do it this way because I’ll buy 6-8 from the farm stand and store them in a basket in the garage over winter.

Looked for butternut squash at the orchard today- everything but butternut. Their pumpkins were absolutely beautiful. Made me feel warm and fuzzy lol. Will try out at White House farms another day for a butternut.
Apples were 26$ a 1/2 bushel. I got 3/4 of a bushel, a mix of cortlands and grimes golden for sauce. Freezers will be packed once I finish the apple sauce tomorrow.

OMG, I just dropped close to $100 at the grocery store and I don't know where it all went. Bread flour is up by at least $1 since I last bought it, dryer sheets are up, coffee-although on sale-was OK, coffee filters were double, dog treats were higher, but were buy 1 get 30% off a 2nd so I got 2, and I got no meat or dairy! And, aside from 1 bag of Halloween candy to hand out to trick or treater's, I stuck to my list of essentials. I'm going to have to reevaluate shopping at Meijer, for sure.

The coffee I get is now $7.99 for a little vacuumed sealed brick.
I found it cheaper at Target.

I wonder if prices/availability will be affected with the dock workers strike.
